Following his graduation from the University of Sioux Falls, DeBoer stayed in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Washington High School.

After a two-year stint at Washington, DeBoer reconnected with Bob Young and returned to his alma mater, taking on the role of offensive coordinator, a position he held from 2000 to 2004.
