Joseph Merhi Career, Movies
Joseph Merhi initially owned a chain of pizzerias in Las Vegas before venturing into the world of film in 1986, inspired by Humphrey Bogart. Arriving in the U.S. in the early 1970s with only $400 and basic English skills, he began his journey as a dishwasher and worked his way up to become a restaurant manager.
In 1997, Merhi opened Pizza N Pizza in Las Vegas and expanded to five more pizza restaurants. However, he later sold them to pursue his passion for filmmaking. His first movie, produced with a budget of $50,000, paved the way for the creation of City Lights, a production company.
Co-founding PM Entertainment Group in 1989 with Richard Pepin, Merhi specialized in low-cost action and martial arts films for TV and distribution circuits. Collaborating with actors such as Michael Madsen and Tom Sizemore, as well as martial artist Gary Daniels, the company gained recognition. In 2000, PM Entertainment Group merged with The Harvey Entertainment Group and was later acquired by Echo Bridge Home Entertainment.
After directing “Executive Target” in 1997, Merhi transitioned to producing straight-to-DVD movies, with a return to directing in 2008 with “Oranges.” Presently, he is involved in real estate projects, developing luxury houses, hotels, apartments, restaurants, and more.
Although he hasn’t produced movies since “Impulse” in 2008, Merhi’s credits as an executive producer and producer include “The Anna Nicole Smith Story,” “Back By Midnight,” “The Whole Ten Yards,” “Spartan,” “The Stray,” “Epicenter,” “Hot Boyz,” “No Tomorrow,” and many others.
